You can become a Community Patrol Volunteer in Ft. Oglethorpe!
First class of 2012 Pictures!!!
A great way to participate in government and help keep our city safe.
What is a Community Patrol Volunteer?
It's someone who has gone through ten weeks of training, including training in:
-
Accident investigation
-
Crime scene investigation
-
Burglary investigation
-
DUI laws
-
Fire arms safety
-
8-hour ride-along with police officer
-
And much more
Training consists of 10 two-hour classes on Tuesday evenings, as well as some time on fire arms safety (a special award goes to the best marksman), and an 8-hour ride-along with a police officer.
You do not have to live within the city limits to participate.
Upon successfully finishing your training, you are awarded a certificate at a graduation ceremony and are qualified to participate in the COPS programs (Citizens on Patrol). You can assist police at public events, and you can even go out in pairs (two COPS members) in a special patrol car to help keep an eye on the city and report problems to the police. You can also ride along with police officers as an observer.
How do you apply?
You can pick up the applications at the police department (City Hall Drive, between Steak-n-Shake and Walgreens on Battlefield Parkway) or you can get them on-line here. A background check is required.
